Summary
Microsoft Teams update policy needs review and modification to enable new Teams before the automatic update on April 30, 2024. Classic Teams users will be auto-updated after this date, missing out on exclusive features of new Teams. Admins should change the policy from 'Not enabled' or 'User choice' to 'New Teams as default' or 'Microsoft controlled'.

More Information

As communicated in MC686187 (October 2023) and MC706396 (January 2024), after April 30, 2024, any classic Microsoft Teams users that have not updated to the new Microsoft Teams will be automatically updated to new Teams.

New Teams now has over 100M+ monthly active users and is increasing by millions daily. All new and innovative features, capabilities, and enhancements to existing features are available exclusively on new Teams.

With April 30, 2024, being less than three months away, we observe that you have currently blocked new Teams by setting the Teams update policy to Not enabled. Alternatively, you may also have the Teams update policy set to Classic Teams as default or User choice, which only allows users to opt-in to using new Teams.

This message center post is to strongly encourage admins to modify the existing Teams update policy to enable users to update to new Teams.

When this will happen:

Standard Release: As stated above, we will complete the rollout in late April 2024 (previously late March).

How this will affect your organization:

Organizations that still have users on the Not enabled or User choice policy for the Teams update policy and are still using classic Teams are missing out on important and exclusive Teams features that are being shipped to new Teams.

After April 2024, all users on these policies will be automatically updated to new Teams directly. Users will no longer be able to toggle back to the classic Teams client, and we will attempt to uninstall classic Teams for users.

Note: As communicated in our MC698876, Teams Live Event producer support will be coming to new Teams in early April 2024 to ensure there are no disruptions to TLE producers due to our auto updates.

Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR), and Surface Hub endpoints will not be impacted until after June 2024. June 30, 2024, is the deadline for VDI.

What you need to do to prepare:

For users in your organization to have the best transition experience, we suggest admins review their current Teams update policy and modify it from Not enabled or User choice setting. We strongly recommend setting the value to New Teams as default or Microsoft controlled to minimize abrupt auto updates for you users.
