Installing Windows Server 2022 on Hyper-V

This article will provide a step-by-step guide on installing Windows Server 2022 on a Hyper-V virtual machine.

Hyper-V is a virtualization platform created by Microsoft and available on most of the Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.

Step 1: Download Windows Server 2022 Evaluation edition here

Step 2: Create a Virtual Machine

  • Go To Hyper-V Manager on the Start Menu.
  • Select New in the Actions Panel and select Virtual Machine.
  • In the New Virtual Machine Wizard, Click Next on the "Before you Begin" page.

  • On the Specify Name and Location, Enter the VM Name.

  • In the Specify Generation page, Select Generation 2

  • In the Assign Memory page, Enter the desired memory and Un-Select "Use Dynamic Memory for this Virtual Machine" and click Next

  • Click Next in the Configure Networking page. Network can be added once the VM is installed.

  • In the Connect Virtual Hard Disk page, Select Create a Virtual Hard Disk and leave the rest as default settings and click Next

  • In the Installation Options, Select Install an Operating System Later and click Next

  • In the Summary page, verify all the settings and click on Finish to create the Virtual Machine.

Step 3: Add Virtual DVD drive and Insert Windows Server 2022 ISO

  • Once the VM is created, Select the VM and Right click and select Connect
  • Go to File menu, and select Settings
  • in the Settings page, Go to SCSI Controller and add DVD Drive from the right-hand side
  • Once the DVD Drive is added, Select Image File on the DVD Drive settings and Click on Browse
  • Browse to the location where Windows Server 2022 Evaluation ISO was saved and add that
  • Click Apply and OK to add the DVD Drive.

Step 4: Install the Operating System

  • Select the VM and Right click and select Connect
  • Click on Start to start the Virtual Machine
  • Once the Operating system Setup is loaded, Select the "Installation Language", "Time and Currency format", and "Keyboard method" and click Next
  • Click on Install
  • Select the "Windows Server 2022 Standard Evaluation (Desktop Experience)" edition and Click Next
  • Accept the Terms and click Next
  • Select the Custom install
  • In the Partition wizard, click on Next to continue with the single partition.
  • Once the Operating system is Installed, VM will be rebooted
  • On the Customize Settings page, Enter the default Administrator account password and Click Finish
