Summary
Starting August 15, Intune will block new custom OMA-URI settings that exist in the settings catalog. Existing settings will not be affected but cannot be recreated if they're in the catalog. Two blocking phases will occur in mid-August and mid-September 2024. Users should transition to using the settings catalog.

More Information

As part of our continuous effort to streamline device management and enhance the user experience, starting on August 15, Intune will begin blocking creation of OMA-URI settings within custom profiles for settings that exist in the settings catalog.

When this will happen:

The process of blocking these settings will be carried out in two phases:

  1. In mid-August 2024 we will start by blocking the least used custom OMA-URI settings in both the admin center and Graph API.
  2. Starting in mid-September 2024 and continuing throughout the rest of the year and into calendar year 2025, we will gradually expand the block to include the other custom OMA-URI settings that are available in the settings catalog.

How this will affect your organization:

Our telemetry indicates that your organization may be utilizing custom OMA-URI settings for device management. Here's what you need to know:

  • Creation of new settings: After the specified date, for settings that exist in the settings catalog, you will no longer be able to create new custom OMA-URI settings through the Intune admin center or Microsoft Graph API.
  • Existing settings: This block will not impact any existing custom OMA URI policies. They can still be edited and will continue to function as expected. However, you will not be able to create additional settings of this type if the existing setting is in the settings catalog.

What you need to do to prepare:

Although there will be no impact on any of your existing policies, we recommend reviewing your existing Windows device management policies and encourage you to utilize the settings catalog instead of a custom template using OMA-URI for policy creation moving forward. The settings catalog offers a more integrated and consistent approach to managing device settings. Otherwise, no action is required, only awareness.
