Summary
Active users of Microsoft Copilot in Teams will soon count towards Teams Copilot usage, potentially increasing active user metrics in reports. Rollout begins late July 2024, requiring no admin action. Adjustments to custom reports using Copilot usage data may be necessary.

More Information

Coming soon: Users of Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat in Microsoft Teams will be counted towards the overall active user count for Copilot in Teams in the Copilot for Microsoft 365 Usage report in the Microsoft 365 admin center and in the Microsoft Copilot Dashboard for Microsoft 365 customers in Viva Insights. This rollout is expected to result in an increase to the count of active users of Copilot in Microsoft Teams in these reports. A Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 license is required to use these features.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 377675 and MC690175 Microsoft Copilot Usage Report (November 2023).

When this will happen:

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out late July 2024 and expect to complete by late July 2024.

How this will affect your organization:

Before this rollout: Usage of Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat in Teams only counts towards the user count for Microsoft Copilot with Graph-grounded chat & (shortened to Copilot chat in these reports).

After this rollout, these metrics may be affected:

In the Microsoft 365 admin center, on the Reports > Usage > Usage tab of Copilot for Microsoft 365:

  • Active users of Teams Copilot may increase.
  • Last activity date of Teams Copilot (UTC) per user may change.

In Viva Insights > Microsoft Copilot Dashboard for Microsoft 365 customers:

  • Active users of Teams Copilot may increase.

The total count of active Copilot for Microsoft 365 users in your tenant in these reports will not be affected by this change. In addition, the Microsoft Copilot Dashboard advanced version for Viva Insights customers is not affected because Copilot chat usage already counted towards the Teams Copilot user count in this report before this rollout.

The changes in this rollout are on by default and are accessible by admins with the appropriate permissions.

The Microsoft 365 admin center report at Reports > Usage > Usage tab of Copilot for Microsoft 365:

What you need to do to prepare:

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout.

If you use the Copilot for Microsoft 365 Usage report in the Microsoft 365 admin center as the basis for your own custom report (for example, by exporting information and incorporating it into a Power BI report), consider revising historical information in that report to account for potential increases to usage of Copilot in Teams. You may want to notify your admins about this change and update any relevant documentation.
