Summary
OneDrive web will support opening PDFs with sensitivity labels in read-only mode for authorized users, starting early October 2024 for Targeted Release and mid-October for General Availability. No admin action is needed, but users should be informed of the change.

More Information

Microsoft OneDrive users can open PDF files that are protected with Microsoft Purview Information Protection sensitivity labels and read them using OneDrive web in read-only mode. Only authorized users will be able to access these PDF files.

When this will happen:

Targeted Release: We will begin rolling out early October 2024 and expect to complete by mid-October 2024.

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, DoD): We will begin rolling out mid-October 2024 and expect to complete by early November 2024.

How this will affect your organization:

Before this rollout, users can open or view PDF files with sensitivity labels in the Microsoft Edge browser.

After the rollout, users will be able to follow these steps to view PDF files with sensitivity labels in OneDrive web as follows:

1. When users open the PDF file with a sensitivity label in OneDrive web, a banner at the top of the screen reads, "This file is protected by Microsoft Purview Information Protection. View permissions."

2. To see the permissions related to the PDF file, users can tap View permissions.

This feature is on by default, and all OneDrive web users have access to it.

What you need to do to prepare:

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.

Before rollout, we will update this post with revised documentation.
