Summary
Microsoft urges customers to update their classic Teams desktop client in VDI to the new Teams app for better experience and lower resource usage. Unsupported classic Teams versions will receive update notifications. End of Support is on October 1st, 2024, with enforcement starting September 24th, 2024. Admins should ensure regular updates to avoid incompatibility.

More Information

Since Microsoft Teams is governed by the Modern Lifecycle Policy, the Teams desktop client needs to be up to date.

Microsoft urges customers to migrate to the new Teams app, which provides a better experience and lower resource consumption when compared to classic Teams.

You are receiving this message because our telemetry shows you still have users on classic Teams versions that were released in 2023, 2022, 2021 or 2020.

Users who are on old versions of classic Teams app will receive in-app notifications to encourage them to update to the latest version of Teams. This is to ensure that users have the latest capabilities, performance enhancements, security features, and service reliability.

While customers can continue to use classic Teams after the End of Support date of October 1st, 2024, a version that is too far out of date will become incompatible with the service until it's updated (MC29882).

Also see MC790104 for End of Support / End of Availability dates in VDI.

When this will happen:

This will be enforced on September 24th, 2024.

How this will affect your organization:

Classic Teams- Windows Versions less than 1.6.00.27573

  • Beginning September 24th, 2024, the classic Teams desktop client may present a blocking page for users and request them to update to the latest version of Teams from this page.

Classic Teams- Windows Versions less than 1.7.00.7251

  • Beginning September 24th, 2024, the classic Teams desktop client may present a dismissible banner notifying users that they are on an old version of Teams.

What you can do to prepare:

To avoid disruption to end-users, the admins with users on Teams versions older than the supported versions (any versions with release dates that are more than 90 days older than the current version's release date) should update their users to the most recent version.

Admins should plan for a regular update cadence to stay current and within the compatibility window.

Microsoft strongly recommends you take action to migrate to the new Teams, to avoid being on an unsupported configuration with classic Teams.
